Every day when we open our morning newspapers or go online, thousands of people are entertained and challenged by the puzzles we find there. There are many different kinds of puzzles, including those that revolve around word problems, logic, numbers, pictures, patterns and mazes, or a number of other variations like brain teasers and riddles. Puzzles sometimes capture the public imagination like Rubik’s Cube did in the 1970s, But puzzles have been popular since the early 1900s, when magazines and newspapers found that they could increase their daily subscriptions by publishing puzzle contests. Today, there are several organizations and events catering to puzzle enthusiasts such as the International Puzzle Party, the National Puzzlers' League and the World Puzzle Federation, which runs a special international puzzle completion. The first one was held in New York in 1992, with national teams determined by local affiliates of the Federation. Of the 15 championships held between 1992 and 2006, 9 have been won by the U.S. team, 3 by the Czech Republic, 1 by Japan and 2 by Germany.
